Sight is but an abbreviated form of touch
We believe we see something when in fact we touch it and where only touch is appropriate. Eventually, we see so much and with such rapidity that we no longer feel things, even though our sense of touch remains the solid foundation and guarantor of seeing. In all of these cases sight is but an abbreviated form of touch. The rounded form becomes a mere figure, the statue a flat engraving.
